The Nasdaq turned lower while the Dow and S&P 500 trimmed gains in afternoon trading on Friday, with Research In Motion's U.S.-listed shares sinking after disappointing results. Energy shares fell in sync with oil prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 36.67 points, or 0.31 percent, at 11,998.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 3.16 points, or 0.25 percent, at 1,270.80. But the Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 4.55 points, or 0.17 percent, at 2,619.15.
