NCIS Season 13
Special Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) will be clinging to life to start "NCIS" Season 13. CBS

"NCIS" left fans with the ultimate cliffhanger at the end of Season 12, with Special Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) lying in the middle of an Iraqi street after being shot down. Is Gibbs alive or did the CBS drama just kill off its lead actor?

An exclusive first look at Season 13 was released by the show on Twitter on Monday. The first look previewed 30 seconds of what's to come in the Sept. 22 premiere.

The clip shows Gibbs being rolled into surgery, where "Two and Half Men" star Jon Cryer is going to be playing his surgeron, Dr. Taft. Gibbs is then shown seeing his daughter, who leads him into a light while his body starts to crash on the operating table.

"Time to dance Mr. Gibbs," Cryer says. "Mind if I lead?"

In the season 12 finale, Gibbs and the Major Case Response Team were in Iraq investigating a terrorist group called the Calling, which recruited young boys through social media before abducting them into the organization. The group, including Gibbs, Special Agent DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and CIA officer Joanna Teague (Mimi Rogers), was able to track one of the boys named Luke (Daniel Zolghadri).

While walking on the street, Gibbs was tricked into walking into an open area where he spotted Luke, who shot at him twice. One bullet hit him in the leg and the other in the stomach.

The rest of the team is then shown continuing to pursue the Calling towards the end the Season 13 preview clip while they hang onto hope that Gibbs will pull through. The final shot of the clip is a big explosion, but it's unclear if any other members of the team are hurt.

Showrunner Gary Glasberg told TVLine that Gibbs injuries are pretty serious.

"He goes through a really traumatic experience, that kind that changes someone,” Glasberg dished. “Really, the whole first half of the [premiere] is this emotional roller coaster ride, of Gibbs’ surgery."

Gibbs has been a mainstay on the popular CBS procedural since Season 1 made its debut in 2003. Will Gibbs survive the attack or will the season 13 premiere be Gibbs' final episode?

“NCIS” Season 13 premieres Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.
