A new red-band trailer for the upcoming film “This Is 40” shows off some of the film’s edgier jokes. The preview takes a step away from the main characters and focuses more on the supporting cast, like Megan Fox, Jason Segel and Chris O’Dowd.

The fourth film directed by acclaimed Hollywood writer and producer Judd Apatow, who also directed hit comedies like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Funny People,” is a spinoff of Apatow’s other work “Knocked Up.” The story follows Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) as they struggle to keep stay happy in their middle-aged years.

Rudd and Mann aren’t the only actors reprising their roles in the film. Jason Segel will play the same, kind of creepy character he did in “Knocked Up,” and Judd Apatow’s children, Maude and Iris, will be playing Pete and Debbie’s kids, Sadie and Charlotte, once again.

Segel is featured in the trailer, once again acting weird toward a woman. He and Chris O’Dowd make awkward passes at Megan Fox as the trio sits in the family pool together.

Even two weeks before the film’s release, critics have given the spinoff favorable reviews. “This Is 40” has an 81 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and 97 percent of RT users say they would see the film.

“Even with all its ups and downs, there are more than enough bawdy laughs and truthful emotional moments to put this over as a mainstream audience pleaser during a holiday season short on good comedies,” writes Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter.

“This Is 40” will be released to theaters Dec. 21.
