Sony Corp said Monday that the lighter, slimmer new version of its Playstation Portable game player reached 1 million sales in Japan in two months, beating the original model's pace by two weeks.

The second generation unit -- launched on September 20 and hitting its millionth sale on November 22 -- is Sony's new effort to knock off Nintendo's portable gaming sales champion, the Nintendo DS.

The new model -- PSP-2000 (Lite) -- is cheaper, lighter, thinner and has a bigger screen than its predecessor which launched three years ago.

Media Create estimates that from November 12 to 18, PSP came in second place in game hardware sales behind Nintendo DS at 65,609 unites, versus 76,069 units respectively.
