It’s been years since Nick Jonas and his two brothers premiered on the music scene and a lot has changed since then. The “Jealous” singer recently partook in a Reddit AMA where he was asked about the purity rings he and his brothers — Kevin and Joe — used to wear.

Rather than shy away from the question about his personal life, Nick, 23, revealed that he and his siblings — who were brought up in a Christian household — were urged to take a vow of purity by an older member of their church. They did so with limited understanding about what they were agreeing to, according to the award-winning musician. He said that he wore the ring for several years, but as he grew up and experienced new things, his values changed. Nick eventually found a woman, whose name he did not reveal, that he loved and felt a sexual connection with. After losing his virginity he ditched the purity ring and began focusing on himself — cultivating new core values.

“There was a person in the church who at one point demanded that all the kids in the youth group put these purity rings on and make this commitment. So without full understanding of what we were stepping into, we all made this commitment. But as you do, you grow up, you live life, you gain some world perspective and you develop your own views and opinions as it relates to faith, as it relates to sex, and everything that falls under the bounds of what your parents teach you and what comes from religion and you get to make your own choices,” he explained. “So I started making my own choices, fell in love with somebody, made the choice to have sex with them and from that point on it was about me being a man and being OK with my choices. And then it related to my art and people’s view of me and the public eye. I think it’s always about being comfortable and confident in who you are.”

In addition to a shift in his personal values, Nick has made some serious career changes. Although music has always been his main focus, the New Jersey native recently revealed that he has other aspirations. During the Berlin Film Festival, Nick opened up about his dreams of acting more. The signer recently landed a role in “Goat,” which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January, and hopes that more roles are in his future — though he never wants to have to choose between his two passions.

“It’s tough to say,” he said. “I hope I can be in a position where I don’t have to choose. It’s challenging and not a lot of people have succeeded at doing both at the same time.”

Nick is the second Jonas brother to publicly discuss his virginity pledge. In 2013 Joe Jonas admitted to Vulture magazine that he had sex for the first time when he was 20. He claimed that he’d engaged in other sexual acts prior to losing his virginity. Joe, 26, also said that he’d “smoked weed” with fellow pop stars Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.
