Nigeria saw riots in the northern region after incumbent Goodluck Jonathan was declared the winner of the presidential elections.

Jonathan, a Christian from southern Nigeria, score a convincing victory over Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim from northern Nigeria and his main opponent. Jonathan’s vote count was nearly twice that of Buhari's.

This commanding victory shows that Jonathan does enjoy some northern and Muslim support. Indeed, Nigeria’s Muslims outnumber the Christians, so Jonathan must have gotten some Muslim votes.

Still, Buhari won in the Muslim-dominated North and some of his supporters there have rioted after Jonathan was declared victorious. At least six people are killed by the riots, according to Bloomberg.
