UPDATE, 2:55 p.m. EDT: Notre Dame announced on its Twitter account Saturday afternoon the death of Billy Meckling. According to media reports Meckling, a 21-year-old senior who was set to graduate, fell from the roof of the school's Edmund P. Joyce Center.

UPDATE, 1:08 p.m. EDT: Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins sent an email to the school's student body informing them of the death of Billy Meckling, a graduating senior in the college's engineering school. "Billy died in an accident on campus early this morning," the statement said. "Our condolences are with all of you, as well as with Billy's family and friends. Billy will be remembered at today's Baccalaureate Mass."

UPDATE, 10:17 a.m. EDT: The student who died after falling from the roof of an events center at the University of Notre Dame has been identified as a 21-year-old graduating senior. WNDU-TV reporter Tricia Harte told International Business Times that the student's death was confirmed by Dennis Brown, Notre Dame's assistant vice president for university communications.

Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., also released a statement on the death Saturday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends after this terrible tragedy,” Jenkins said. “It is a profound sadness for all of us, on this graduation weekend, to lose someone so young and brimming with promise.”

WNDU-TV reported that an initial investigation showed that the victim was with a small group of students who had somehow gained access to the roof of the Edmund P. Joyce Center during the night. It rained Saturday morning and the roof was reportedly wet from precipitation at the time he was on the roof. Neither the school nor local authorities have released the student's name, pending family notification, the station reported.

A student at the University of Notre Dame has died in an accident on the school’s campus, Indiana’s WNDU-TV reported Saturday. While there was no word on how the student died or details on the accident, the school has confirmed the death, according to WNDU-TV.

The accident reportedly happened on campus early Saturday morning near the Edmund P. Joyce Center, an arena at the school just north of its South Bend, Indiana, campus. A reporter from Mishawaka, Indiana, station WSBT-TV says the student was a 22-year-old senior who died when he fell from the roof of the Joyce Center.

Emergency crews were stationed at the scene, the WNDU reported.

Further details on the incident, including the name of the Notre Dame student who fell to his death, have not yet been released.
