New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has injured his hand in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, according to multiple reports. Details on the severity of the injury were unconfirmed, but some media outlets reported that Pierre-Paul may have lost some fingers.

Andy Slater, a radio host in Miami, was one of the first who tweeted about the incident, describing Pierre-Paul’s hand as “severely injured.” Other reports, as per ESPN, have stated that Pierre Paul suffered "severe burns on his palm and tips of three fingers" but doctors' initial diagnosis was that the injuries were not career-threatening.

Pierre-Paul, who has been with the Giants since 2010, received the “franchise tag” from the team this offseason. A contract offer of $14.8 million for 2015 has yet to be signed by Pierre-Paul, who wanted a long-term deal. Pierre-Paul was also absent from organized team activities, offseason workout programs and a Giants minicamp.

There is still no official word from the Giants about the accident. Pierre-Paul, who has made the NFL Pro Bowl twice in his career, was part of the Giants’ championship team that won Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, 2012.
