Mexico will face Brazil in the gold-medal soccer final at Wembley Stadium, as Mexico got a late goal in the final moments to hold off Japan's effort to even the match, 3-1. Brazil breezed past South Korea, 3-0, as the Neymar-led squad seek their first gold medal in the country's history.
The U.S. women's basketball team breezed past Canada in the quarterfinals, 91-48. Diana Taurasi scored 22 points and Sue Bird added 21 for the Americans. The U.S. will face Australia, who defeated China, on Thursday in the semifinals.
It was a tight race in the 100-meter hurdles, as Australian Sally Pearson edged defending champion Dawn Harper of the U.S. to win gold in an Olympic-record 12.35 seconds. Pearson defeated Harper by .02 seconds. Kellie Wells finished with the bronze at 12:48, while Lolo Jones, came in fourth at 12.58.
Aly Raisman, the U.S. women's gymnastics captain, earned the gold in the floor exercise. The 18-year-old scored a 15.600 for her second medal in individual competition. Romania's Catalina Ponor, the 2004 champion on floor, took the silver, while Aliya Mustafina of Russia earned her fourth medal of the Games with a bronze.
It was an eventful day in women's water polo, as several of the matches ended with tight scores in the quarterfinals. It was an 11-9 score for the U.S. team's win over Australia, as well as Russia's victory over Great Britain. Spain got by Hungary, 10-9, while China defeated Italy, 14-10.
The semifinals are set in women's volleyball, as well, as Brazil, Japan, the U.S. and South Korea advanced.
The U.S. had a great day in women's beach volleyball. Jennifer Kessy and April Ross held off Brazil's Larissa and Juliana, while Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh defeated China's Zhang Xi and Xue Chen to set up an all-American final.
China took the gold in the women's team table tennis with a 3-0 win over Japan. Singapore earned the bronze with a victory over South Korea.
