The holiday season is definitely over for the Mikaelson clan. “The Originals” returned for a dramatic second half of Season 2 when the winter premiere of the hit CW series aired Monday.

Episode 10, “Gonna Set Your Flag on Fire,” kicked off with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) giving fans an update on their favorite characters since the winter finale: Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is still traumatized from being tortured by his mother, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) was weighing her options to either marry Jackson (Nathan Parsons) or explore her feelings for Elijah, Kol (Daniel Sharman) was taking his witchy relationship with Davina (Danielle Campbell) to the next level, Rebekah (Claire Holt) was still locked away, Finn (Yusuf Gatewood) was plotting his revenge against Klaus and the hybrid was bragging about getting his.

“Congratulations I guess?” Cami (Leah Pipes) said in response to Klaus revealing the ultimatum he gave Esther (Sonja Sohn) during the midseason finale. As we all remember, Klaus gave his mother the choice of either killing herself or becoming the creature she hated the most in the world: a vampire. Klaus then changed the dark subject to a lighter one when he introduced Cami to the “little troublemaker” responsible for causing all the chaos in New Orleans.

After all the high-pitched hellos given to baby Hope, Klaus explained his newest plan for NOLA now that Esther had been handled. This involved making the city safe from Finn. But little did Klaus know Finn had teamed up with the powerful papa Mikaelson (Sebastian Roche).

As Finn and Mikael organized a way to take down Klaus, Hayley used her free time to plan a very intimate wedding.

“I know we’re diving into this thing but it’s cool. I’m looking forward to the knowing you part,” Jackson sweetly said.

Rebekah, who was last seen in a different body when episode 9 concluded, was attempting to find a way out of the insane asylum where Kol left her. Thankfully, there was one other person in the institution who understood Rebekah’s situation and believed her soul was trapped. Cassie (Natalie Dreyfuss), who Esther previously used as a vessel, revealed to Rebekah no one leaves the asylum -- unless they’re dead. That’s when Rebekah asked the harvest witch to help her send a message to her family. However, an unknown entity responded to Rebekah’s cry for help.

But Rebekah wasn’t the only one who found herself locked up in episode 10. As the witches, wolves and vampires gathered to plot against Finn, the momma’s boy concocted a spell to trap the supernatural creatures in one big witch bubble of doom. So how did the rivalry gangs cope with the predicament? Well, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) only had one solution:

“Drink and hopefully blow off a little steam,” he said, attempting to bring levity to the situation.

Cami got her drink on, too, in episode 10. But Elijah thought she was pushing alcohol on him just to have him open up about his feelings. “Has it ever occurred to you that I’m less interested in fixing your problems and more interested in forgetting my own?” she asked, giving Elijah an example from her gloomy past. That’s when the two decided to forget their woes by playing a board game -- infused with some booze. But it was all fun and games until the drinks were spilled. In a tipsy moment, Cami accidentally dropped her beverage on Elijah, which lead to a total freak out from the vamp.

“I’m not as fragile as my brother suggests,” the dapper Elijah said with fury in his eyes.

Meanwhile, Hayley opened up to Jackson about her romantic night with Elijah.

“Are you in love with him?” Jackson asked after Hayley came clean about her rendezvous with the vampire. “Right, guess I already knew that, didn’t I?” he answered his own question when she failed to respond.

But what was even more awkward than Hayley admitting to cheating on Jackson was when the vampires started craving blood as they were locked away with the wolves. Finn had conducted a spell to turn the vampires into savage beasts by giving them an insatiable thirst.

Klaus tried to negotiate with his brother but Finn revealed he desired nothing more than to “exterminate the plague” Klaus called his kind. That’s when Klaus agreed to release Esther to Finn if his brother allowed the wolves to escape from the dome.

When Finn finally found his mother he realized she had been turned into the creature she had taught him to despise.

“You’re a hypocrite. You caved to temptation rather then sticking with your principles,” Finn said after learning his mother chose eternal life as a vampire rather than killing herself. That’s when Finn decided to carry out his mother’s plan by killing her.

But the major twist occurred at the end of episode 10 when it was revealed the spirit who responded to Rebekah’s inquiry was none other than her sister Freya. Freya was taken as collateral by their evil aunt Dahlia in exchange for Esther’s fertility. Guess we’re one step closer to meeting crazy Aunt D, aren’t we?
