Outlander Season 2
New photos show Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) wearing fashionable French outfits in "Outlander" Season 2. Starz

“Outlander” is going to look very different in Season 2. Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) will head to France in an attempt to stop the Battle of Culloden. They want to change the future, but they’ll have to look like they belong in French society. New pictures show off their costumes.

The photo from Entertainment Weekly doesn’t show a hint of tartan. Jamie has neatly tied back his hair and ditched his kilt, while Claire’s dress is brightly colored with tons of layers. The style looks very different from Season 1, but it’s historically accurate.

The Starz drama’s costume designer, Terry Dresbach, said that she is dedicated to getting all the details just right. “In Scotland, there is not a ton of research out there about what they wore. It was a rough place,” she told EW. “But France [in the 18th century] was one of the most well-documented periods of fashion in the world, so you better get it right. There is no wiggle room. Everything has to be sumptuous and lavish and every inch is beaded and embroidered. This is why I came back into the business to do this show. Getting to do 18th century French court is a designer’s dream. It’s fabulous.”

But just because Claire looks the part doesn’t mean she enjoys it. Sitting with French women isn’t thrilling for the adventurous time traveler. “In Paris, the ladies don beautiful clothes, sip tea and gossip. It drives Claire mad,” Balfe told TV Insider.

Though Claire will likely have to stick around the women for quite some time, it looks like she’ll ditch the bright colors eventually. As her pregnancy goes on, she won’t be able to fit into the lavish gowns. Another new “Outlander” Season 2 photo shows her wearing the dark, muted colors that she wore often last year, but this time she has quite a baby bump.

Viewers who miss Jamie’s kilts don’t need to worry. Those who read the book Season 2 is based on, Diana Gabaldon’s “Dragonfly in Amber,” know that he and Claire won’t stay away from Scotland for too long.

“Outlander” Season 2 premieres in the spring on Starz.
