KEY POINTS

  • Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl title
  • Mahomes became the first to win regular season MVP and Super Bowl MVP since Kurt Warner
  • "We're not done," Mahomes says of the Chiefs becoming the NFL's next great dynasty

The Kansas City Chiefs played behind the Philadelphia Eagles for the better part of Super Bowl LVII until their offense, powered by Patrick Mahomes, found their way to their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.

Mahomes and the Chiefs were counted out from the beginning of the playoffs after he suffered a high ankle sprain in their Divisional Round victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It would be an understandable take since such injuries severely debilitate one's ability to make quick cuts and remain generally mobile, but Mahomes was able to power through it all the way to the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs' offense was hesitant and stagnating for much of the first half for a multitude of reasons, but they went out of their way and produced another stunning comeback under Mahomes.

Entering the second half, Mahomes had only completed eight of his 13 passing attempts alongside one touchdown while grimacing on the bench after being tackled late in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Kansas City and Mahomes brought out their flamethrowers as they went toe-to-toe with the Jalen Hurts-led Eagles.

When it was all said and done, the practically one-legged Mahomes had amassed 182 passing yards on 21-of-27 passing attempts plus three touchdowns while racking up 44 yards on six carries.

Winning a single Super Bowl is already difficult in and of itself because of the adversity and obstacles that one franchise has to deal with every single season.

But for a single player to make it to the big game three times in four years is simply the stuff of legends and Mahomes has firmly entrenched his status as arguably the greatest quarterback of his generation.

Mahomes is far and away the most accomplished quarterback in the 2017 draft class, well ahead of Mitch Trubisky and Deshaun Watson while being well ahead of his AFC counterparts like Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Derek Carr and Lamar Jackson.

To top it all off, Mahomes is the very first player to win both the regular season MVP and Super Bowl MVP trophies in the same season since Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams upended the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV to close out the 1999 NFL season.

With two Super Bowl titles, two Super Bowl MVPs and two regular season MVPs under his belt at just age 27, the future looks extremely bright for Kansas City.

This would be the point where fans would point towards head coach Andy Reid and his team as the next big dynasty in the NFL since Tom Brady, head coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, but they are in no rush to declare themselves as such.

"I'm not going to say dynasty yet, we're not done, so I'm not going to say dynasty yet," Mahomes jovially said during the trophy presentation.
