To add insult to injury, Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith scored a last minute goal against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, shooting the puck across the entire rink into the unmanned goal net.

The “goalie goal” solidified an already commanding lead and win for the Phoenix Coyotes against the Detroit Red Wings with a final score of 5-2.

Smith’s “goalie goal,” which crossed the goal line with just one tenth of a second left on the game clock, makes him the 11th goaltender ever to be credited with a goal by the NHL. His goal is the 14th in NHL history to be recorded and credited to a goaltender.

The last “goalie goal” recorded before Smith’s was credited to Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, who scored the goal after the Carolina Hurricanes’ Jordan Staal, back passed the hockey puck into his team’s own net back in March 21, 2013, according to NHL.com.
