Prince William and Prince Harry have selected a sculptor who will create a massive Princess Diana statue to commemorate their mom’s 20th death anniversary.

The siblings revealed that they have commissioned Ian Rank-Broadley for the job. Rank-Broadley also happens to be the one responsible for creating the effigy of Queen Elizabeth that is found on all British coins since 1998.

Prince William and Prince Harry also released a joint statement expressing their gratitude to the successful commemoration of their mom for the past couple of months.

“We have been touched by the kind words and memories so many people have shared about our mother over these past few months. It is clear the significance of her work is still felt by many in the U.K. and across the world, even 20 years after her death,” they said (via People).

Princess Diana’s statue will be placed outside Kensington Palace, and it will be accessible to those that will visit the place. Prince William and Prince Harry said that putting up a statue will be the perfect way to remember their mom for the rest of their lives.

As of late, the official unveiling of the statue has yet to be announced. But it is projected to be finished come 2019.

Rank-Broadley was not only selected by the brothers, but also by Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Princess Diana’s former top aide, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton. The latter also happens to be one of Prince George’s godparents.

The sculptor released a statement following his selection and said (via The Guardian), “It is my sole and highest intention to fulfill the expectations of Their Royal Highness in creating a lasting and fitting memorial to their late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.”

Princess Diana passed away on Aug. 31, 1997 following a car crash in Paris. On the 20th anniversary of her death, thousands of people flocked Kensington Palace to pay tribute to the princess. They left posters, flowers, pictures, flags, candles and other items to remember her.

No big commemorations were scheduled on her death anniversary, and Princess Diana’s sons decided to stay inside their home, according to Mirror UK.
