Prison Break
Sarah Wayne Callies wants to make sure that she returns for the right reasons if “Prison Break” is renewed for Season 6. Fox

“Prison Break” returned from the dead for one more season this year, but if it’s successful enough, Season 5 might not be the end for the revival. However, Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Sara on the Fox drama, doesn’t want to think about a possible Season 6 renewal yet.

“I’ve thought that the door for ‘Prison Break’ has closed for me personally so many times, I’m not even going to think about whether or not it’s open or closed now because I keep being wrong,” Callies told International Business Times.

Sara has had many endings on the Fox drama. On the show’s original run, Sara’s life was left in the balance at the end of Season 1 when she nearly died of a drug overdose. Then in Season 3, Michael (Wentworth Miller) received her head in a box, making it look like she’d been killed. In Season 4, she walked off into the sunset with her son after Michael’s death. All of these seemed like pretty permanent endings, but Sara always manages to come back. The same could happen after Tuesday’s “Prison Break: Resurrection” finale.

For the actress, who is also on USA’s “Colony,” it’s all about Sara’s storyline. “Coming back for more episodes would be kind of dependent on the way I came back to this which is: let’s talk about the material, let’s talk about the character, let’s read a script,” she explained.

Callies feels indebted to “Prison Break” audiences and wants to make sure that the show does not overstay its welcome. “I love this character. I love this story. I owe a tremendous amount to this story and to the fans of this story,” the actress emphasized. “And that actually makes me more careful to make me want to curate the stories that we tell with real care and real intention. Not to do it because there’s a lot of hype and it might be successful and maybe it’ll make us famous.”

Of course, Callies isn’t the only one whose career was launched after “Prison Break.” While she stars on “Colony,” Miller and Dominic Purcell are on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” That means that they had to ask for permission to film another TV show.

“It was really just through the good grace of all of those showrunners and networks and studios that we were allowed to do it because when you sign a series contract, you sign an exclusive contract,” the actress told IBT. “And so every one of us that was working had to get permission. And I’m just extraordinarily moved by the amount of goodwill there was towards us the actors and towards the ‘Prison Break’ project in general that all of these various productions were gracious enough to let their stars go star in another show. That’s really beautiful and I’m super grateful for it.”

Prison Break
“Prison Break” Season 5 ends May 30, but Season 6 is not out of the question. Fox

“Prison Break” Season 5 is currently averaging over 2.6 million viewers each week and about 0.97 in the 18-49 demographic. That’s better than “The Exorcist” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” both of which were renewed for next season. While the drama was left off the schedule for the 2017-18 season, that doesn’t mean the series is canceled.

Fox is interested in a potential sixth season. TVLine reports that Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden confirmed that the network was considering renewing the series for another revival event. “We would definitely consider doing more episodes,” Walden said. “I know [the producers] are thinking about it.”

While Season 6 depends on Fox and other factors beyond the actress’ control, Callies also noted that the “Prison Break” revival was pitched to her as a one-time deal. The show originally ended without creator Paul Scheuring on the writing team, so Season 5 was his chance to give viewers the ending he always intended.

“It certainly wasn’t pitched to me as, ‘Let’s start the show again.’ It was kind of about, ‘Let’s end the show the way the show could have ended another time.’ I don’t know,” the Dartmouth alum said. “If people are talking about more of it, they can talk about more of it. I will continue to take it as a joke until I hear that it’s serious from someone like Paul Scheuring.”

Fans can tune in to the “Prison Break: Resurrection” finale Tuesday at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
