The cosmos have been a vast source of inspiration for anyone who's spent time looking up at the sky. Space and its many wonders have fueled science and innovation, and every new discovery leads to even more fascination with what's next. Whether it's dark matter, supermassive black holes, alien life or landing on Mars, space is an endless curiosity. Which is why Pornhub launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the "first porno in space." It's all about the science, of course.

Pornhub, the self-described No. 1 free adult website in the world, has turned to crowdfunding to raise the $3.4 million it needs to send "sextronauts" Eva Lovia and Johnny Sins to space as part of its "Sexploration." Pornhub will be teaming up with adult studio Digital Playground to make the adult flick a reality.

"Columbus, Galileo, Da Vinci, Edison and Ford, among others, have all physically and culturally helped shape the planet that we currently call home. Recently, however, the focus has been shifting over and out to what lies beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Some are contemplating colonizing Mars while others are promising elevators into space by 2050. One way or another, there are many elements about life in space that need careful consideration and research…especially sex," Pornhub explained on its Indiegogo page. As with all crowdfunding ventures, contributions lead to perks. A $10 contribution lets you get the video 24 hours in advance while a $150,000 contribution will land you a "Uranus" perk that includes one of the spacesuits worn during the mission.

Lovia and Sins would undertake six months of astronaut training prior to their performance in microgravity. Pornhub estimated 60 percent of its Indiegogo funding would be used for the cost of space flight. As for how it will happen, that's another question.

"The production of the video will begin when the spaceship takes flight. Filming will commence upon takeoff and as the ship climbs, so will the lovemaking. As soon as the ship reaches its maximum altitude there will be weightlessness (zero gravity) for at least a few minutes," Pornhub told International Business Times. "Our actors will be having sex and climaxing within that time frame – ideally, of course. Thankfully we have a very experienced production crew and directorial team to help make the money shot happen in a way that looks dynamic and revolutionary for viewers."

Getting to space is another hurdle Pornhub would have to overcome. "We’re actually currently in talks with a number of companies, but because of the nature of our endeavor, we aren’t really able to disclose the details of those talks just yet for fear that that would risk unnecessary fallout from the aforementioned parties," Pornhub said.

Pornhub may not be that crazy for thinking about sex in space. In fact, there have been plenty of articles and discussion about the effects of microgravity on the ability to perform. In an article from 2006, Alan Boyle discussed the numerous complications of having sex in space. People sweat more in microgravity and the heat between bodies would be trapped between the partners. In terms of physics, microgravity could cause nausea and it's pretty difficult to stay close to another person in zero-g. There's also the issue of low blood pressure in space that could cause some problems for men, Slate's Christopher Beam notes.

"One of the things that gravity helps us do is stay together, so sex in microgravity might actually be more difficult because you’re going to have to make sure that you’re always holding each other so you don’t drift apart. It might be a lot more challenging and a lot less fulfilling than most people think," Paul Root Wolpe, the director of Emory University’s Center for Ethics and a senior bioethicist at NASA, said in an interview with Motherboard.

Sex in space as a research topic may not happen any time soon, Motherboard explained, and that's why this space porno could actually shed some light on the topic.
