The Puppy Bowl is the annual television event sponsored and premiered on Animal Planet that mimics the Super Bowl, but with cute puppies running around as contestants instead of professional athletes. The program is in its seventh year and first premiered on Feb. 6, 2005.
The puppies play in a model stadium and are divided into teams. Points are scored whenever one team is able to bring a chew toy into the end zone. A sportscaster offers commentary and player background throughout the show.
Most of the puppies are from a local adoption centers. Besides its attraction as Super Bowl counterprogramming, one reason the Puppy Bowl was created was help the puppies find owners. Adoption information is usually shown during the show.
