A teen from Brevard County, Florida has been hospitalized after acquiring a brain infection believed to be caused by an amoeba, according to officials.

16-year-old Courtney Nash was swimming in a local river when she came into contact with the amoeba, and is currently in critical condition.

"Amoebic meningoencephalitis" is a very rare infection, according to epidemiologist Barry Inman, and although the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have yet to confirm it, officials are expecting a positive test result.
