Rays sign Upton to one-year, $4.8 million contract
The Tampa Bay Rays have avoided arbitration with B.J. Upton by signing the outfielder to a one-year contract worth $4.8 million, the team said.
Last season the 27-year-old Upton became only the fifth American League center fielder ever to record 60 extra base hits and 40 stolen bases, the Rays said in a news release.
He had 42 stolen bases, sixth best in the majors, and 60 extra base hits while batting .237.
Upton went to arbitration last year, seeking $3.3 million, but was awarded $3 million.
