The iPhone Dev Team has released the updated edition of both PwnageTool and redsn0w to bring an untethered jailbreak for Apple's latest firmware, FW 4.3.1.

Except for iPad2, the new untether works on all devices that support 4.3.1 which includes iPhone3GS, iPhone4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad1 and AppleTV 2G.

The Dev-Team blog gave reason as to why the untether does not work on iPad2, stating that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.

Germany-based security researcher and iPhone hacker, Stefan Esser, has released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1.

In a tweet recently, Stefan, who has been hounded for updates about the untethered jailbreak, provided the download link to the file. However, the catch was that the file was password protected.

With over 1.6 million users worldwide, the iPhone Dev Team has developed a number of tools to enable use of applications not authorized by Apple Inc on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and to enable use of the iPhone on GSM carriers not contracted by Apple.

In fact, the group has become almost emblematic for these applications termed as jailbreak and SIM unlocking.
