Shares of Research In Motion Ltd. rose 4.8 percent before the opening bell on Thursday after the Globe and Mail newspaper said the company has won permission to sell its BlackBerry device in China after eight years of effort.

Shares were up at $218 in electronic trade after closing on the Nasdaq at $207.94.
