BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said on Friday a lawsuit was filed against the company in New York and that it believes the allegations are without merit.

The lawsuit alleges the company and some of its officers made materially false and misleading statements regarding the company's financial condition and business prospects, between December 16, 2010 and April 28, 2011.

RIM said the lawsuit seeks unspecified damages on behalf of shareholders during this period.

The company said it intends to vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit, which has been filed in the U.S. Court for the Southern District of New York.
