Violence erupted during Sunday's game between Romanian clubs Petrolul Ploiesti and Steaua Bucharest when a fan invaded the pitch and punched Steaua defender George Galamaz in the head.

Defender George Galamaz, capped four times by Romania, sustained a serious facial injury after a Petrolul fan invaded the pitch and punched him. The supporter then clashed with Martinovic who kicked him and wrestled him to the ground where the supporter was kicked again before security guards led him away.

The player remained in hospital with a broken right cheekbone and will be sidelined for 45 days, the club said.

After Galamaz was attacked, teammates knocked the fan to the ground and began beating him, resulting in red cards for two players.

The game between visiting Steaua Bucharest and Petrolul Ploiesti was halted after the violence.
