Less than a week after a gruesome grizzly attack at Yellowstone Park claimed a 57-year-old California man's life, a vacationing Oregon man has rescued a woman facing down another bear.

Erin Prophet was exploring the park when a grizzly approached her on Monday. Prophet dropped her shoes and backpack and retreated into a river, where 37-year-old Dave Beecham paddled over and snagged her.

The bear was getting closer to her and she dropped her backpack; apparently she had an apple in the pack, and we thought it was a good idea to go and get her at that point, Beecham said.

Park officials, seeking to allay the concerns of anxious visitors, have encouraged hikers to carry pepper spray to ward off bear attacks. Perhaps they could use some paddles as well.
