Ashe (Sanaa Lathan) and Preston (Stephan James) continue to investigate the separate deaths of Jesse (Jacob Leinbach) and Joey (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) as they figure out a way to expose the corrupt inner workings of the sheriff’s department in Season 1, episode 3 of “Shots Fired.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “Hour Three: Somebody’s Son,” Ashe and Preston examine evidence of both investigations, which send them first to Jesse’s old college campus, then on a dangerous manhunt for the only two credible witnesses in Joey’s case: Cory (Marqus Clae) and Kiana (Antonique Smith).

In Season 1, episode 2, Preston found out from Mr. Dabney (John Beasley) that Cory went missing after he talked to Preston. Thinking that Cory’s disappearance has something to do with the corrupt inner workings of the sheriff’s department, Preston got Cory’s disappearance on the books by bringing it up with Sheriff Platt (Will Patton) himself.

Ashe learned about Kiana from Joey’s mom, Shameeka (DeWanda Wise). “[She lived] a few buildings over. [She] told some people she was there when they took my boy,” Shameeka told Ashe last episode. “I went over there to talk to her but she moved out. Ain’t say nothing to nobody. She was just gone.”

In the preview clip for episode 3, Preston confronts Sheriff Platt after seemingly figuring out that the sheriff’s department was responsible for Cory and Kiana’s disappearances. “Is this some sort of game to you?” Preston angrily asks the sheriff.

“Be careful to make an accusation you can’t back up,” Sheriff Platt replies.

In an attempt to calm Preston’s strong feelings against the sheriff’s department, Ashe tells her partner: “We have to be patient. We have to trust each other, and keep digging.”

Surprisingly, Preston answers: “I’m done being patient.”

Meanwhile, the political implications of both cases also begin to unfold in next week’s episode. Governor Eamons (Helen Hunt) pays Shameeka a visit after Pastor Janae (Aisha Hinds) urges the politician to do more for the poorest communities in Gate Station. Eamons’ biggest rival, Penn Moder (Ronald Keith Harris, Jr.), on the other hand, seeks out Jesse’s mother, Alicia (Jill Hennessy).

“Shots Fired” Season 1, episode 3 airs on Wednesday, April 5 at 8 p.m. EST on FOX. Watch the preview clip below:
