Research In Motion’s BlackBerry remained at the top position with a share of 31.6 percent but lost 5.7 percentage points in the fourth quarter of 2010. The release of BlackBerry OS 6 shows promise, but not all the BlackBerry smartphones have received an update.Late to the touch screen party, the BlackBerry Storm 9500 and Strom 9530 didn’t do well in spite of having a very good hardware simply as they didn’t get the touch screen in BlackBerry OS5 right. Nokia held on to its operating system for a long time until the arrival of Symbian^3 in 2010, but few changes can be seen on the latest operating system. The latest smartphone release from Finland is the Nokia N8, with sales touching close to 4 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.Like the BlackBerry OS, Symbian lacks a large app selection form the Ovi Store. As with the iOS, widgets are for the most part absent. Symbian^3 didn’t show many changes from the previous versions, and with the shuffles at the top of the Symbian Foundation, it isn’t clear that the OS will attract app developers. As Nokia is rolling out MeeGo-based devices in its next round of products, it doesn’t look like much will improve for Symbian.
