The University of Southern Mississippi dismissed five band members and revoked their scholarships after they chanted Where's your green card? at a Kansas State basketball player during a NCAA Tournament game last week.

Southern Miss band members created an uproar last Thursday when they aimed their racially insensitive chant at Angel Rodriguez, a Hispanic freshman guard, late in a 70-64 loss to the Wildcats. The school conducted an internal investigation and determined who started the chant.

The students have been forthcoming, cooperative, contrite and sincerely remorseful, USM Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Paul said in a statement. They acted rashly and inappropriately, and now see the gravity of their words and actions.

Rodriguez accepted an apology by the school saying, there's ignorant people and I know that's not how they want to represent their university. He added that they might need a civics lesson because Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, so we don't need no type of papers.
