The S&P 500 index briefly turned higher on Friday, reversing losses. Industrial shares helped to support the market, offsetting data showing an unexpected decline in non-farm payrolls in December.

Shares of United Parcel Service were up after the shipping company boosted its fourth-quarter outlook.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 26.00 points, or 0.25 percent, at 10,580.86. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 0.62 point, or 0.05 percent, at 1,141.07, after briefly trading higher. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 13.41 points, or 0.58 percent, at 2,313.46.
