Maya (Minnie Driver) delivered some bad news to her husband Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) in a sneak peek for tonight’s episode of “Speechless.”

“I got some bad news,” Maya tells Jimmy in the 50-second scene from Season 1, episode 5, titled “H-a-l-Halloween.” “The kids aren’t going to do family costume this year. They’re ditching us for Halloween.”

“Oh … that physically hurts,” says a disappointed Jimmy, who is working on JJ’s (Micah Fowler) supposed Halloween costume: the DeLorean time machine from “Back to the Future.”

Maya tries to comfort Jimmy by saying: “Well, we knew this day is coming. They’re all growing up.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, Maya also attempts to cheer Jimmy up by letting him do activities he loves, such as taking things off the family “Dead to Me” list.

Dressing up as a family during Halloween has been an annual tradition for the DiMeos, and that explains why Jimmy doesn’t take it well when he learns that his children don’t want to do it anymore. See the DiMeos’ Halloween costumes a few years back in the Twitter post below:

For some reason, however, the DiMeos still end up putting on their “Back to the Future”-themed costumes in the episode. Take a look at the behind-the-scenes photos shared by Driver and Fowler on their Instagram pages.

Also in the episode, Ray (Mason Cook) seeks out Dylan (Kyla Kenedy) for help on making Lafayette High School’s haunted mansion. Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough), on the other hand, is worried about being terminated from his job when JJ gets drunk at a party. Although Maya is fuming after what happened, she is happy to see JJ having a “normal” life as a teenager.

“Speechless” Season 1, episode 5, airs tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
