Summer is over and the DiMeo kids are heading back to school in tonight’s episode of “Speechless.” But it isn’t just an ordinary first day of school for the siblings, as it’s the very first time they get to stay in the same school after a summer vacation.

In a sneak peek from Season 2, episode 2 of the ABC comedy, Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) are telling Ray (Mason Cook), Dylan (Kyla Kenedy) and JJ (Micah Fowler) to hurry up for school when Maya (Minnie Driver) walks into the dining table and informs them about what’s so special about the day.

“Oh my goodness, it’s first second first day,” Maya gushes in the video, much to the confusion of her family. “First day of school, it’s your second year at the same school, first time that happens, [so it’s] first second first day!”

When Ray still doesn’t understand it, Maya walks closer to him and says: “Ray, you’re supposed to be the smart one. Pretend to get it.”

“Oh, yeah. It’s great,” replies the DiMeo middle child.

According to TV Guide, the decision to keep the DiMeo kids in Lafayette High School is part of the show’s plan to see the family put down roots for the first time and become part of a community.

Meanwhile, the synopsis for the episode reveals that Maya is going to assist other parents of special-needs kids by telling them to demand full-time aides. While Maya’s intention in helping seems to be pure, this initiative of hers may backfire on her.

As Uproxx reported last month, when word spreads throughout the special needs community that Lafayette is open for business, so many families with special-needs kids move into the district that it runs out of money. The news outlet noted that the district’s shortage of funds could lead to JJ losing Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) as his aide.

Elsewhere in episode 2, Dylan develops a hooky habit; JJ pushes Kenneth toward romance with his teacher; and Jimmy wants an interrupted shower.

“Speechless” Season 2, episode 2, titled “F-i-First S-e-Second F-First Day,” airs tonight at 8:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
