Stocks traded choppily around breakeven shortly after the open on Thursday after a report that Goldman Sachs received a subpoena from U.S. authorities regarding its role in the housing market collapse.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 15.06 points, or 0.12 percent, to 12,275.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was unchanged at 1,314.55. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 9.06 points, or 0.33 percent, to 2,778.25.
