Three students were shot today at Gardena High School in Los Angeles County, California, according to local media reports.

Police have made an arrest, a young man who may be the shooter, reports said.

Gardena Police Lt. Steve Pendergast told the media that the shooter appeared to be a student. Local television cameras filmed police subduing a young man dressed in black outside a classroom door about 2;40 p.m. ET.

The school is on lockdown. Reports say one victim has been taken to an area hospital. The conditions of all three victims are unknown at this time, although there is at least one girl and one boy among them.

Police say a teacher alerted them to the situation, which may have involved the taking of hostages, around 1:40 p.m. ET.

Some media reports say police know the name of the suspect, believed to 18 years old, but have not yet released it.

Gardena is a town south of Los Angeles with a population of about 57,000. The high school is believed to have about 2,600 students.
