Hours before Super Bowl 2023 kicks off, the point spread still favors the Philadelphia Eagles over the Kansas City Chiefs. The over/under is north of 50 for what's expected to be an exciting game.

According to the latest Super Bowl odds at most sportsbooks, the Eagles are 1.5-point favorites. The over/under is 51. The Chiefs have +105 odds to pull off what would barely be considered an upset. Philadelphia has -125 odds to win straight up.

It's one of the smallest point spreads in Super Bowl history. Usually, one of the teams is favored by at least a field goal.

The Los Angeles Rams were 4.5-point favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals in last year's Super Bowl. The Rams won 23-20 but failed to cover the spread. Two years ago, the Chiefs were blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9 as three-point Super Bowl favorites.

The Super Bowl odds for Patrick Mahomes' first trip to the big game three years ago features the second-smallest Super Bowl point spread in history. The Chiefs were one-point favorites over the San Francisco 49ers. Kansas City won 31-20, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
The favorite has won three of the last four Super Bowls. The last 10 Super Bowl underdogs are 7-3 against the spread and 6-4 straight up.

Prior to last year, the most recent Super Bowl underdog that covered the spread but failed to win the game was the Arizona Cardinals in 2009. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cardinals 27-23 as seven-point favorites.

It's highly unlikely that the Chiefs will cover the spread and still lose to the Eagles. Only one of Philadelphia's 16 victories this season have come by one point. Kansas City hasn't lost a one-point game since Week 2 of last season.

Last year's Super Bowl over/under was 48.5. The betting total was north of 54 in each of the previous three Super Bowls.

The Eagles played in one of the highest-scoring Super Bowls of all time five years ago when they beat the New England Patriots 41-33. Philadelphia has scored more than 30 points in both of its playoff games.

The Chiefs have scored 50 points in two postseason games.

Super Bowl 2023 features the two best quarterbacks of the season. Mahomes won his second MVP award. Jalen Hurt was the runner-up in the 2022 MVP voting.

In the last Super Bowl matchup between the NFL MVP and the runner-up, the Patriots beat the Falcons 34-28.
