“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” is scheduled to be released next week, specifically on Dec. 7. Now, the upcoming game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, has confirmed that owners of the game will have to download a day one patch before they could play the game.

“We will distribute our first update on launch day,” Sakurai told Famitsu in an interview, according to ComicBook.com. “Players who purchased the digital version don't need to worry, but players who purchased the physical version should apply this day-one patch before you play. This will also prevent your replays from going off-track. By the way, if you save your replays as videos, you can keep them forever, but note that they take up a lot of space!”

Unfortunately, Sakurai didn’t provide any information on the size of the day one update. He also didn’t specify how large saved gameplay clips will be, but it would be a safe bet that each replay video clip could be around 100MB or more. For those purchasing “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” digitally, the game will take up 13GB of storage, which is massive considering that the Nintendo Switch only has 32GB solid-state drive. The size of the game is about the same as “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.”

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” is the very first game in the series to be released on the Nintendo Switch console. It will also be the only game in the franchise to have every single character and stage that has ever been featured on “Super Smash Bros,” as pointed out by GameSpot. The game’s roster will also add some new characters and Nintendo has announced that it will release five more characters throughout 2019 as DLCs. These characters will be available to play if users buy thee $25 Fighters Pass. Players who purchase the game early will also be given Piranha Plant as an additional character for free in February 2019.
