Kara (Melissa Benoist) comes up with a very courageous plan to stop Rhea (Teri Hatcher) and the Daxamites from invading Earth in Season 2 finale of “Supergirl.”

In the trailer for the episode, Kara challenges Rhea to a trial by combat. “May the fate of my people rest on the fate of my life,” the Girl of Steel says in the preview clip.

While Kara’s decision is selfless, her boyfriend Mon-El (Chris Wood) isn’t thrilled with her choice. “You just invoked a trial by combat!” an upset Mon-El tells Kara at the DEO.

Cat (Calista Flockhart), meanwhile, supports Supergirl’s decision. “Do you think Supergirl is ready for this?” the CatCo Worldwide Media founder asks Supergirl’s alter ego Kara.

“She is,” answers the journalist.

“Then I put all my chips on the Girl of Steel,” Cat says.

The trailer also shows Kara and her cousin Clark, a.k.a. Superman, exchanging blows with each other. As revealed at the end of last night’s Season 2, episode 21, the Man of Steel is being controlled by Rhea.

The fight scene between the two Kryptonians was filmed in Vancouver’s Robson Square last month. See some set photos of Benoist and Hoechlin filming the scene below:

The trailer for the finale also teases the debut appearance of General Zod (Mark Gibbon). “The people of this planet will kneel before me,” Zod says in the clip. It’s unclear, however, whether Zod is an ally of Rhea or a completely new threat to Earth.

“It’s a great moment,” Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly of Zod’s arrival to National City. “We needed a big, iconic Superman villain, and there really isn’t anybody more iconic, at least in terms of a physical opponent for Superman, than Zod.”

While a lot of viewers are looking forward to seeing Zod in the finale, Kreisberg said in a separate interview with TVLine that Zod’s appearance is more like a cameo than a full-fledged guest-starring appearance.

“It’s a bit of a fun surprise,” Kreisberg said of Zod’s introduction to the show. “He doesn’t have a lot of screen time, so I can’t say our interpretation is as nuanced as either [‘Superman II’s’] Terence Stamp or [‘Man of Steel’s’] Michael Shannon, but we did one thing to put our own stamp on it — at least visually.”

The exec producer said that Gibbon’s version of the character will have “a little bit of that Nazi uniform look you’d see in the comics in the ‘60s.” So “Supergirl’s” Zod is visually different from Stamp’s Zod who wears what looks like a martial arts kimono, and from Shannon’s version who sports a robotic armor.

“It’s definitely fun for us,” Kreisberg said of bringing Zod into “Supergirl.” “And when you see the context in which he appears, it could only be Zod in that episode.”

According to Comic Book Resources, the finale also sees the return of M’gann (Sharon Leal), who might help J’onn (David Harewood) recover after getting injured from an attack from Rhea.

“Supergirl” Season 2 finale, titled “Nevertheless, She Persisted,” airs on Monday, May 22 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
