Mr. Mxyzptlk (Peter Gadiot) has to go through Mon-El (Chris Wood) to win Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) hand in marriage in Season 2, episode 13 of “Supergirl.” But it doesn’t necessarily mean that Mr. Mxyzptlk sees the Daxamite as a rival for the Kryptonian’s heart.

“He sees Mon-El as a fly he needs to swat away,” Gadiot told TVLine with a laugh. “Mon-El is just a pest who’s getting in the way of him being with Kara.”

Gadiot, however, revealed that his character eventually finds Mon-El irritating as they fight over Kara. “Over the course of the episode, [Mon-El] becomes more and more annoying to [Mr. Mxyzptlk],” the “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” alum said. “And things get even more complicated when Mixy realizes that he and Kara already have a sort-of relationship.”

As seen in the trailer for the episode, the conflict between the two culminates with a “Hamilton”-esque duel, which Gadiot said was “really fun” to film.

Wood previously teased that face-off in a separate interview with TVLine. “When he ends up fighting Mr. Mxyzptlk, he definitely has all of [those feelings for Kara] fueling his blows,” Wood said. “Every punch is filled with ‘Don’t touch her! She’s mine!’”

“Mon-El hates this guy,” Wood added of what his character’s think of Mr. Mxyzptlk. “He hates that he’s ruined this moment where they’re finally going to connect, and he hates even more that this guy wants Kara to marry him and is trying to manipulate the situation into making her almost feel like he has no choice.”

While Mr. Mxyzptlk is one of the most notorious pranksters in DC Comics, Gadiot said that his character’s love for Kara is no joke.

“Mxy is someone who is very much powerful and doesn’t quite see why anyone wouldn’t fall for him,” Gadiot told The Hollywood Reporter. “He hopes that Kara thinks he’s kind of cute and a bit dashing. I don't want to spoil too much but essentially he noticed her in the cosmos and he was quite taken by her obvious beauty and her unique powers. When someone witnesses someone so affecting, no matter where they are, he was compelled to follow this amazing creature and hopefully woo her. He thinks they have a future as a lovely romantic couple.”

“Supergirl’ Season 2, episode 13, titled “Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk,” airs on Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
