What happens when the landscapes and settings of “Mass Effect” meet with the mythology and combat of “The Witcher?” Fans get “The Technomancer,” a new action role-playing game (Action RPG) that mixes science fiction with fantasy and is set on the planet Mars.

The game comes from developer Spiders, the same creators of “Faery: Legends of Avalon” and “Bound by Flame.” A Pre-Alpha demo of the game was showcased last week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, where IGN was able to get some hands-on time with the space-themed game.

Many of the story elements of the title will be familiar to fans of “The Witcher 3,” as a Technomancer is a magic-powered being that is shunned by society for reasons that haven’t been explained yet.

According to PC Gamer, “The Technomancer” appears to be a pseudo follow-up to another title from Spiders called “Mars: War Logs.” While there weren’t any Technomancers in the previous game, the fact that the title is set on Mars could lead to some sort of connection, though it’s also possible that Spiders simply likes Mars a lot.

While the game is attempting to mix up themes of sci-fi and fantasy, “The Technomancer” is also attempting to blend in two other popular video game settings: post-apocalyptic worlds and cyberpunk, which is an interesting combination. While not much of the cyberpunk aspect has been explored yet, it’s clear that the title is very post-apocalyptic, because humans are living on Mars instead of good old Earth.

From what can be seen of the game so far, players will be able to wield a very cool looking Electric Baton that can smack a lot of these mysterious red beings, which could be Martians. The combat is in real time, so smacking the red beings could be a thrilling experience, though there are also some stealth sections for those who want to play some of it in a sneaky manner.

Thanks to an intriguing premise and a mix of familiar genres, “The Technomancer” looks to be a promising title, with a fun concept to boot. The title comes out sometime in 2016 for Sony's PlayStation 4, Microsoft's Xbox One and the PC.
