A man in suit gazing into his phone in a park, a Mexican worker texting and laughing on the street, these are the subjects of Joseph Holmes' new photo series: Texters. An award-winning photographer, Holmes documented this essential element of urban life on the streets of New York City.

The percentage of Americans age 12 and older who have a smartphone has more than doubled in the past year, from 14 percent to 31 percent of the population, according to a recent study by Arbitron and Edison Research.
