Why did “Thor: Ragnarok” add new characters Skurge the Executioner (Karl Urban) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) into the mix? What roles will they play in the third “Thor” film?

According to spoilers provided by Comic Book, the movie, which is directed by Taika Waititi, is actually going to follow the Planet Hulk storyline. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is going to look for his fellow Avenger Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and find him engaging in some epic gladiator battles. The two will team up and try to escape the arena, which is being run by The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).

They will reportedly come face-to-face with Skurge during the gladiator battles. Thankfully for them, they will run into Valkyrie, a beautiful warrior and fellow contestant who decides to help the two escape and prevent the doom associated with Ragnarok.

It was actually rumored earlier that Valkyrie will become Thor’s new love interest, but the rumor was dismissed by Screen Geek. Although there will be a spark between the two characters, they won’t become a couple and will simply remain friends.

It seems like Marvel is going to maintain Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster as Thor’s main love interest, even though she won’t make an appearance in the third film. In fact, her name won’t even be mentioned at all in the upcoming film.

Marvel president Kevin Feige told The Empire Film Podcast that there are “many reasons” that will explain Jane’s absence, but the biggest reason will have to be the setting. “There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie. [Around] 80 to 90 percent takes place in the cosmos,” he said.

Aside from Valkyrie and Skurge, another newbie in the franchise is Hela - Marvel’s first female villain - who will be played by Cate Blanchett.

“Thor: Ragnarok” will be released on Nov. 3, 2017.
