Twitter has been searching for a way to bring the most important information on the service to the forefront of users feeds, and now the company is using old technology to get the job done.

Twitter has launched a new email newsletter that will be delivered weekly. The email will include the most-shared stories from the users that a given person follows and some of the most engaging tweets.

Starting today, you can discover the best of Twitter in a weekly email digest delivered to your inbox, said Twitter on its blog. This summary features the most relevant Tweets and stories shared by the people you're connected to on Twitter.

For those that haven't received the email, it looks almost identical to the information provided in the Discover section of Twitter. The email highlights the most-shared stories among a person's followers and delivers them in an easily digestible email. The new email will also highlight the most engaging Tweets viewed by the people you follow, even if you don't follow the person who has written the tweet. While the purpose of the email newsletter is to highlight relevent information for each of its users, many have been critical of its departure from Twitter's emphasis on immediacy.

Betabeat, the New York Observer's technology blog, ran a story titled Just What You Never Wanted: A Weekly Newsletter Of Tweets that argues one week is a long time to wait for tweets, which are typically understood as short, immediate bursts of information.

Thankfully, for those that are determined to keep their email inboxes free of any more newsletters, Twitter has made it easy for people to unsubscribe. Just visit the settings page of your Twitter account and uncheck the designated updates box.
