U.S. stocks trimmed gains on Tuesday as lagging technology shares offset earlier cheer over mergers and acquisitions and signs of progress in securing European financial backing for Greece.

* The Dow fared worse than the other indexes, slipping into negative territory as declines in International Business Machines and Microsoft weighed.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was off 4.54 points, or 0.04 percent, to 10,399.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> edged up 1.63 points, or 0.15 percent, at 1,117.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 2.91 points, or 0.13 percent, to 2,276.48.
