A vegan woman from Pennsylvania is facing charges for allegedly endangering her child’s life by enforcing a strict diet on her 11-month-old son.

Elizabeth Hawk, 33, was arrested last week after the child’s father brought the child to authorities, saying that his wife was “obsessed” with keeping strict checks on the boy’s diet and had only been feeding him fruits and nuts.

Brandy Hawk, the child’s aunt, told KDKA that he started showing signs of physical problems like a severe rash on his body. “It was his motor skills; he couldn’t use his hands at all,” she added.

While the mother maintained that these were just “allergies,” Jerry Hawk, the child’s father, decided to take him to a hospital where the doctors told him that the boy’s development was delayed because of malnourishment.

Investigators have charged the mother with endangering the welfare of a child after the authorities found that she was failing to provide the boy with sufficient nutrition.

The child has been separated from the mother and put in the custody of the father, who also has their two other children living with him. The condition of the boy is reportedly improving. However, it is not known when the mother will appear in court for a preliminary hearing in the case.
