After a rather tepid first half, England and the Netherlands went on a scoring barrage with the Dutch edging the Three Lions at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday, 3-2.
Arjen Robben got the scoring started in the 57th minute with perhaps the best international goal of the year. The Bayern Munich winger accepted the ball from his own defensive half and sprinted up the middle to unleash a left-footed strike from just beyond the box that a helpless Joe Hart had no chance to block.
Within a minute, the Netherlands followed that effort with another score when Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt delivered an excellent cross to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who knocked in an equally quality header.
But England would mount a comeback in the closing minutes. In the 85th minute, the Dutch defense failed to pick up Leighton Baines and the defender was able to deliver a fine through ball to centre back Gary Cahill, and the Chelsea newcomer calmly cut the lead in half with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box.
In stoppage time, Manchester United teammates Phil Jones and Ashley Young connected as Young lifted the ball above Maarten Stekelenburg to level the match.
However, the evened score was short-lived as Robben returned with another goal moments later that took a deflection off of Cahill to put the visitors ahead for good.
