An own goal by Phil Jones helped Benfica manage a draw against Premier League titan Manchester United, 2-2, in Champions League play at Old Trafford, on Tuesday.

Jones's mistake occurred in the third minute when he knocked in a Benfica cross while on the edge of the six-yard box. The Red Devils would even the match at the 30-minute mark when Dimitar Berbatov, who has been used sparingly this season, headed in Nani's cross.

A close-range effort from Darren Fletcher put United ahead in the 59th minute, but Benfica would come right back.

One minute after Fletcher's goal, Pablo Aimar equalized from close range himself off a David De Gea mistake, to earn the hard-fought draw for the Portuguese club.

With the draw, the Red Devils now need to avoid a loss to qualify for the knockout round, when they face Basel at St Jakob-Park on Dec. 7.

Manchester United took 15 shots, with seven on goal, while Benfica took 11 shots with four on goal. The Red Devils controlled possession for nearly two-thirds of the match.

Injured Wayne Rooney was not on the 18-man roster. Sir Alex Ferguson sat Ryan Giggs and Ji-Sung Park, and brought Javier Hernandez on as a substitute.

With the draw, Benfica have advanced to the knockout round and will now look to earn the top spot in their match against Otelul Galati on Dec. 7.
