Despite a promising start, Bayern Munich imploded Wednesday night against Real Madrid. Two yellow cards from Bayern defender Javi Martinez in the span of three minutes opened up an opportunity for Cristiano Ronaldo to record a brace for Real Madrid in a 2-1 win in the first leg of a Champions League quarterfinals match at Allianz Arena.

While attacking midfielder Arturo Vidal was able to deliver a powerful header in the 25th minute to put the German champions in front, he would send a penalty kick high above the crossbar just before the half. The frustrations would continue for the Chilean, who would receive a yellow card for shoving Luka Modric, and he might have been spared another yellow after putting his fingers to the chest of Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli.

The second half would belong to the Spanish titans. Two minutes after the break, Ronaldo delivered a right-footed shot from the center of the box to level the match off a solid cross from right back Dani Carvajal.

Real Madrid would catch another break with fouls from Martinez in the 58th and 61st minute that led to his sending off. The second challenge may not have touched Ronaldo, but it was cynical enough for Rizzoli to issue another yellow and perhaps doom 10-man Bayern.

From there, Los Blancos would take over with a well-orchestrated attack. Off a well-placed cross by substitute Marco Asensio in the 77th minute, Ronaldo managed to get a boot on the ball, which slipped its way past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's grasp.

It was a monumental goal for the Portuguese superstar. Not only was it the game winner but it was also his 100th goal across all European competitions and his two goals ended a seven-month Champions League goal drought.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will meet in the second leg on April 18 at Santiago Bernabeu.
