Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered further Champions League misery, with the Paris Saint-Germain star shown a controversial red card in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie against Chelsea. With the score still tied at 1-1 from the first leg just past the half-hour mark at Stamford Bridge, Ibrahimovic went into a 50-50 challenge with Oscar from which the Chelsea man came out on the worse end and referee Bjorn Kuipers almost immediately pulled out his red card.

While Ibrahimovic quietly made his way back to the dressing room, his teammates protested furiously and with some justification. While it had been a firm challenge, both players had gone in strongly and there did not appear to be any recklessness from the Swede. The visitors’ frustrations were riled further by their perception that Chelsea’s players surrounding the referee had influenced his decision.

The decision leaves PSG with a major uphill struggle to get a result they need to progress to the quarterfinals. And it could therefore be another disappointment in Europe’s premier competition for one of the world’s best players. Despite winning 11 league titles in his career, Ibrahimovic has never won the Champions League.
