The Dow Jones industrial average dipped on Tuesday, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 added losses, after Caterpillar Inc , a major economic bellwether, said it expected a challenging third quarter.

The U.S. machinery maker also announced plans for a rolling shutdown of its factories during the period, tempering some of the optimism that followed its stronger-than-expected second quarter profit.

Caterpillar's stock, up 5.4 percent at $38.63, pulled back from its intraday high of $41.45 and hit a session low following its outlook comments.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> declined 10.43 points, or 0.12 percent, to 8,837.72. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> slipped 5.86 points, or 0.62 percent, to 945.27. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> fell 12.09 points, or 0.63 percent, to 1,897.20.
