Stocks opened lower on Tuesday as a slew of corporate earnings failed to persuade investors to add to the previous session's gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 22.18 points, or 0.19 percent, at 11,958.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dipped 3.45 points, or 0.27 percent, at 1,287.39. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was off 11.75 points, or 0.43 percent, at 2,705.80.
