Stocks slipped on Tuesday as solid earnings and consumer confidence data were tempered by trepidation over a churning political and regulatory landscape.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> eased 3.40 points, or 0.03 percent, to 10,193.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> lost 4.65 points, or 0.42 percent, to 1,092.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dipped 7.07 points, or 0.32 percent, to 2,203.73.
