Stocks recovered from early losses in light volume on Monday, ending little changed as prospects for strong earnings overcame fears Portugal would be forced into a bailout.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 37.39 points, or 0.32 percent, at 11,637.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 1.75 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,269.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 4.63 points, or 0.17 percent, at 2,707.80.
